The media has a certain power over the public that should not exist. Magazines, movies, tv shows all alter our perception of reality. We see the lifestyle of the rich and famous and see what we are lacking. Every girl has insecurities, and when magazines call a 100 pound woman "flabby" or "fat," not only is it extremely far from the truth, but it puts the idea into the readers' heads that they could be unattractive. According to mediaawareness.com, 70% of the editorial content in teen magazines focuses on beauty and fashion. This shows the pressures that young girls face to have a certain image. The wrong types of role models are thrust into their minds, Barbie, Kate Moss, and Britney Spears. Seeing these things in the media causes eating disorders and low self-esteem.
The media glamorizes immoral things. Parties, sex, and drugs are portrayed as normal things. Youth feel that this is the glamorous way of living and try to follow these examples. According to the "Children Now Survey," 2/3 of girls who participated in a National Survey said they "wanted to look like a character on TV." The media puts too much pressure and immorality into the minds of the youth and I think that if Hollywood would glamorize the average woman and moral things, then they would positively influence the mindset of the next generation.
